Havdalah
Havdalah is a special mini celebration that Jews do in order to commemorate and mark the end of Shabbat and the beginning of the new week. This mini celebration involves a braided candle, smelling spices, and a cup of wine! Havdalah helps us take the special feelings we get from shabbat, such as peace and holiness, in to the upcoming week!
Story Time!
Every saturday night, Daniel and his family come together to do the havdalah together and to bring in the new week! Daniels favorite part about this ceremony is holding the braided candle for everyone to see the reflection of the fire ont heri nails. It is traditional to put your nails up to the fire and try to see the reflection of the fire on your nails. This is in order to symbolize the light and fire of Shabbat that we are trying to take with us into the week ahead in order to give us a peaceful and holy week in our very busy lives! As the flames were flickering and he was seeing the reflection on his nails, Daniel felt excited for the upcoming week knowing that the feelings of Shabbat will be with him through his whole week!
Steps:
01.
Light the Candle
Light the special Havdalah candle, which has multiple braided wicks. The bright flames symbolize the light of Shabbat that stays with us as we enter the new week.
02.
Smell the Spices
Take a spice box filled with sweet-smelling spices (besamim), and pass it around for everyone to smell. The spices remind us to carry the sweetness of Shabbat into the week ahead.
03.
Say the Blessings
Recite the Havdalah blessings over the wine, spices, and candle. The blessings thank God for the difference between the holiness of Shabbat and the rest of the week.
04.
Extinguish the Candle
After the blessings, dip the Havdalah candle into the wine to extinguish the flame. This signals the official end of Shabbat, and the start of the new week.
