Kiddush
Kiddush is the special prayer and blessing that is recited over wine or grape juice on friday night shabbat in order to help bring in Shabbat! It is a way to bring Shabbat in and to also recognize it as the holy resting day. This ritual was actually created by the Chachamim in order for people to have a "toast" over shabbat and to get more into shabbat!
Story Time!
Once upon a time, a group of wise Jews called the Chachamim noticed that people were following all of shabbats rules but they weren't always focused on the holiness of shabbat and thus many people were missing out on this mitzvah. In order to help connect with shabbat more they created this ritual of starting shabbat with Kiddush, a toast, that would remind everyone of the holiness of shabbat. Ultimately, this ritual is now known to be a part of kiddush all around the world and helps Jews every week complete the mitzvah of recognizing the holiness of shabbat every week!
Steps:
01.
Pour the Wine
Before the meal, pour wine or grape juice into a special Kiddush cup. This cup is used to sanctify the Shabbat meal.
02.
Say the Blessing
Hold the Kiddush cup in your right hand and say the blessing:
“Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha’olam, borei p’ri hagafen.”
03.
Drink
After the blessing, take a small sip from the Kiddush cup. This symbolizes the sweetness and holiness of Shabbat.
04.
Pass the Cup
Pass the Kiddush cup around to family members so everyone can take a sip or use their own small cups to share in the blessing.
