Lighting Shabbat Candles
Lighting Shabbat candles is a special Jewish tradition that marks the start/enter of shabbat! Families light the candles on friday evening around sunset(slightly before) in order to bring peace and tranquility to the house as well as to welcome in the shabbat. It is also used as a time to reflect and welcome in the day of rest!
Story Time!
Noah has been watching her mom light the Shabbat candles for a while now and has been dreading to try it herself. This week, her mom told here that it was her turn! Noah's face lit up, she was ecstatic! Noah carefully lit each candle one by one and then waved her hands over the flames while covering her eyes just like her mom had taught her. Then together they said the blessing. Afterwards, Noah peeked trough her small fingers and looked at the flickering light of the candles. She felt a special kind of peace fill the room around her. This was the moment that Noah realized these shabbat candles really do "bring" shabbat into the home!
Steps:
01.
Prepare the Candles
Before sunset on Friday, place two candles in holders. These candles represent peace and rest as Shabbat begins.
02.
Light the Candles
Light the candles before sunset. As the flames flicker, they bring warmth and light into your home, welcoming Shabbat.
03.
Wave Your Hands
After lighting the candles, wave your hands over the flames three times, bringing the light toward you. Then, cover your eyes as you prepare to say the blessing.
04.
Say the Blessing
Recite the blessing over the candles: “Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha’olam, asher kid'shanu b’mitzvotav v’tzivanu l’hadlik ner shel Shabbat.”
01
Blessed are You, Lord our G‑d, King of the universe, who has granted us life, sustained us, and enabled us to reach this occasion
02
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to light the Shabbat candles.
